Thank you for your essay on this topic, Nancy. I couldn't agree with you more. I have 3 kids of my own, currently 15, 13, and 9. They are turning out quite well without having received any beatings over the years, and they do feel free to share with me about all aspects of their lives. Keeping the lines of communication open with them is far more beneficial than intimidating them with the threat of physical punishment. I also work as a teacher for young children. Nothing saddens me more than when I come across a child that has been hit. This kind of child will cower if I make any sudden movements. It reminds me of an animal that has been abused. It's just wrong.

Questions from the choir

1.Don't you think people who are "hitters", where hit? Some to this day by life, don't you think it's more emotional projection.

2. Is it a way of looking at it? A lot of people are trying to live through parenthood instead of live it, so quick fixes make sense.

3. Do you know who Todd Glass is?

I agree. When children are taught writing as a process, they are given the tools necessary to generate and explore ideas. They learn essential techniques for expressing their ideas. And, they have the opportunity to take glimpses into their unique thought processes. When we put pen to paper and allow ourselves the freedom to brainstorm, we quickly discover how much we have to say. I commend teachers who foster this exploration and who encourage young people to find their voices as writers. Check out the awesome film Freedom Writers.
